Teheran | An Iranian man has been sentenced to death after his own doctor testified before authorities that his patient ‘took pleasure in masturbating while reading the Quran’, reports the Persian Times this week.
The man’s doctor notified authorities after his patient allegedly told him that he touched himself ‘in a erotic fashion’ while reading verses concerning the 72 virgins promised to Muslim men in paradise and mentioned multiple times in the Quran.
Akim Abubakar, husband and father of two, pleaded that he was trying to cure himself from his addiction to masturbation through the lecture of the Quran, yet admitted he did not know that having an erection while reading the Quran was harram, or forbidden by Islamic law.
“His unholy relationship with the holy Quran forced me to set an exemplary sentence” the judge deliberated.

“Stoning is a duty laid down in Allah’s Book for married men and women who commit adultery” he concluded in court, ruling that this was also a “clear case of enmity against God”.

Erotic literature in the Quran
Middle Eastern specialist Daniel Clemmings says the judgment is unusual, but not surprising.
“The Qur’anic texts contain a number of erotic passages which describe a sensual Paradise where believing men are rewarded by being wed to virgins with “full grown”, “swelling” or “pears-shaped” breasts” he explains.
“Some Islamic scholars have commented on the erotic nature of the Qur’anic Paradise, by saying some men may need ghusl (ablution required after sexual discharge) just for hearing certain verses” he adds.
“In the Sunan Ibn Majah, one of the six major Hadith collections, it states that every male admitted into Paradise will be given eternal erections and wed to 72 wives, all with libidinous sex organs” he mentions.
“I guess even for a devout Muslim reading such erotically charged literature, it must sometimes be hard not to have sinful thoughts” he comments.
According to Amnesty International, Iranian authorities are believed to have executed an astonishing 694 people between January and July 2016, an unprecedented spike in executions in the country.
